Andrew Garfield Opens Up About Losing His Mother

Tick, Tick… Boom! star Andrew Garfield has revealed that he hopes the grief he feels over losing his mother stays with him.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, Garfield fought back tears as he talked about his late mother, Lynn.

“I love talking about her, by the way, so if I cry, it’s only a beautiful thing,” he said, visibly emotional.

“This is all the unexpressed love, the grief that will remain with us until we pass because we never get enough time with each other. So I hope this grief stays with me because it’s all the unexpressed love that I didn’t get to tell her.”

He added: “And I told her every day; we all told her every day, she was the best of us.”

Garfield was able to fuel his grief through his art, finding parallels between his own life and his new movie, Tick, Tick… Boom!, about the late Jonathon Larson.

“Both John and my mother were artists and they were warriors for art.

“They knew the power of art, and they knew the power of leaving the world in a slightly more beautiful state than when they found it.

“I got to sing Jonathan Larson’s unfinished song while simultaneously singing for my mother and her unfinished song,” said Garfield, holding back his tears.

Tick, Tick… Boom! is available to stream on Netflix.
