Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that a second season of the hit Netflix show is in development.
The first season of Squid Game followed 456 debt-ridden contestants, coerced to play a series of deadly children’s games in the hopes of securing the $40 million prize.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Hwang said he had “no choice” but to make season two. The director previously stated that he was in no hurry to continue the show, calling the prospect “tiring”.
“So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said, “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!”
Though he gave no indication when production on a second season could begin, he did confirm that he was developing an idea for the script and that season one star, Gi-hun, would return.
“But I will say, there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now, I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how it’s going to happen. So I will promise you this… Gi-hun will come back, he’ll do something for the world.”
