The Council of Fashion Design Awards got underway on Wednesday, and rapper Kid Cudi’s wedding dress look was the highlight of the night.
The red carpet was full of bold looks, including Zendaya’s show stopping Vera Wang two piece, and Drew Barrymore’s lemon gown by Christian Siriano.
But Kid Cudi stood out with his gender bending wedding dress gown designed by ERL, the white-hot West Coast label launched in 2018 by American Emerging Designer of the Year nominee Eli Russell Linnetz.
This isn’t the first time Kid Cudi has made a statement through fashion.
For his Saturday Night Live performance this April, the musician took to the stage in a floral Off-White gown that paid homage to one of his heroes, Kurt Cobain, who wore a similar design for a Nirvana gig in 1989.
He has also in the past expressed his admiration for fellow musician Lil Nas X for breaking down gender norms and stereotypes within hip-hop music.
According to CNN, Cudi said ”To have a gay man in hip-hop doing his thing, crushing records — that is huge for us and for Black excellence. The way he’s unafraid to make people uncomfortable is so rock ‘n’ roll. He’s a true rock star.”
Cudi taking steps to use his privilege as a successful cisgender male to elevate others that have often been cast aside by the music industry is very exciting to see, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
