Opinion: Top Picks From New Music Friday With Montell Fish

It’s Friday once again, and that means another host of new music has dropped.

Years & Years are back with new music, teaming up with Galantis for Sweet Talker.

Mura Masa is back among the original releases with 2gether, gearing up for a follow-up album to 2020’s R.Y.C.

As part of Amazon Prime’s show Hanna, Norwegian singer Aurora – known for hit-single Runaway – has shared the equally captivating Midas Touch.

American singer-songwriter Catie Turner, who shot to fame after gracing American Idol with some of her original music, has put out into the world one of her best songs yet.

In her words, God Must Hate Me is about religious trauma and the lyricism is spectacular: “If Jesus died for all our sins, he left one behind the body I’m in / the same hands that made the moon and the stars got carpal tunnel and forgot some parts,” she sings.

And Craig David, MNEK and Mike Brainchild have teamed up to release Who You Are – Part 2.

Artist on the Rise – Montell Fish

This week’s artist on the rise is American singer-songwriter Montell Fish.

Unlike previous weeks’ ‘Artist on the Rise’, Fish is already well on his way with over two million monthly listeners on Spotify.

His rapid rise in popularity is largely due to TikTok, where he is nearing 800 thousand follows and already has over 16 million likes across his videos.

Soft indie meets Christianity for the 22-year-old, with music that explores what ‘the lord has done’ for him.

Fish’s most popular song emerged as Talk 2 Me, nearing 12 million streams on Spotify.

And on New Music Friday this week, he has shared yet another masterpiece in the form of Destroy Myself Just For You.

While Fish has millions of monthly listeners, it is not out of touch to suggest that his ceiling is infinite and there are millions more – especially outside of just TikTok – that would buy into what looks set to be a phenomenal career in music.
