Ridley Scott has blamed the box office failure of his latest film The Last Duel on ‘millennials’ and their ‘mobile phones’.
Speaking to Marc Maron on his WTF podcast, the film director was asked why his recent movie, grossed just $27 million at the box office, a figure far below the film’s budget of $100 million.
“I think what it boils down to [is that] what we’ve got today [are] the audiences who were brought up on these f***ing cell phones. The millennial, [who] do not ever want to be taught anything unless you tell it on the cell phone,” Scott replied.
“This is a broad stroke, but I think we’re dealing with it right now with Facebook. This is a misdirection that has happened where it’s given the wrong kind of confidence to this latest generation, I think,” he added.
Scott also came to defence of Disney’s marketing team, who’s job it was to promote the film, saying: “Disney did a fantastic promotion job. The bosses loved the movie because I was concerned it was not for them.”
Despite, the commercial failure of the film, Scott also insisted that he has no regrets about making the movie.
“I’ve never had one regret on any movie I’ve ever made. Nothing,” he said.
Scott’s second movie of this year, House of Gucci is set to be released on November 26th. The Last Duel is available in cinemas now.
