Boxer Rolando Romero has been removed from the scheduled fight against Gervonta Davis amid accusations of sexual abuse.
Romero, who is undefeated in fourteen career fights, was due to take on Davis on December 5. According to ESPN, 23-year-old Isaac Cruz will now take Romero’s place in the ring.
In a recent report by Sports Illustrated, alleged victim Izabel Zambrano reiterated the accusations she previously made public via Twitter. She claimed that Romero sexually assaulted her in 2019 following a game of Connect 4 at his Las Vegas apartment.
“We struggled,” she said. “I was really scared.”
Zambrano has since shared the alleged assault with police, adding that the incident was “a paralyzing moment” which had left her feeling unable to report it sooner.
Responding on Instagram, Romero wrote that the allegations were “totally false”.
“Although the allegations against me are totally false and I will prove that through the legal system,” he wrote. “I agree that is it in the best interest of everyone involved that I not participate in the upcoming pay-per-view event. After cleaning my name I will return to the ring as soon as possible.”
