Nightmare Alley (2021)

One of the best films of 2021, Nightmare Alley came out on the same day as Spider-Man: No Way Home and amid the rising threat of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. Now, it may finally get the attention it deserves as it becomes available on Hulu.

A carnival worker sees his chance to make it big with a mentalism act. He breaks off on his own with the woman he loves, but he soon finds himself getting deeper and deeper into his con, making enemies with powerful, dangerous people.

Do the Right Thing (1989)

The film’s racial themes sadly remain relevant today, with gentrification and rising anti-Black racism driving home the film’s message of injustice and its depiction of community. Lee is a legend of American cinema, and Do the Right Thing is no small part of that legacy.

The Beta Test (2021)

After films like Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow, Jim Cummings is one of the most exciting new American indie filmmakers. With 2021’s The Beta Test, he once again proves that he’s an original new voice in cinema, taking on the Hollywood machine and all the abuse and hypocrisy that comes with it. The Beta Test is one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week.

Kimi (2022)

In Kimi, he teams up with actress Zoë Kravitz for a Hitchcockian techno-thriller. Set in Seattle during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimi follows a tech worker with agoraphobia discovering what may be a recording of a violent crime while she’s reviewing data. Stalled by endless bureaucratic dead-ends with her employer, she has to face her fears and venture out to get to the bottom of things.

I Want You Back (2022)

Peter and Emma are two strangers who realize they were dumped on the same day. Rather than count their losses, they hatch a plan to get things back on track. Of course, nothing goes as expected.

Tall Girl 2 (2022)

Still, with all of that change comes new challenges and insecurities. She may not just be the “tall girl” anymore, but Jodi has to decide what comes next.

Bigbug (2022)

Bigbug tells the story of a group of suburbanites living in the near future. When an android revolt breaks out, the humans are confined indoors by their household robots to protect them from the violence outside.

The Sky Is Everywhere (2022)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

A direct sequel to the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre takes place nearly 50 years after the events of the original. Leatherface has hung up his chainsaw, but when a group of youngsters accidentally stumble upon his home, he comes out of retirement for one last killing spree.

The slasher sequel features the return of the original final girl Sally, played this time around by Olwen Fouéré. It is co-written by Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues and directed by David Blue Garcia.
