The 5 Best Places to Visit in North America for Fun Outdoor Winter Activities

If you’re like most people, you have probably spent the better part of the last couple of years indoors. But, winter is here once again, and with it comes the opportunity for holiday travel and fun, with exhilarating winter activities to explore.

In this list, you’ll find some of the best places to visit and the most exciting things to do in the USA and Canada so that you can make your next holiday trip truly memorable.

Snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, Montana

Yellowstone National Park frequently tops lists of the best snowmobiling locations in the USA, and for a good reason. What makes Yellowstone such a great destination for snowmobilers is how close visitors feel to the wildness of nature.

With a snowmobile, the park’s many, seemingly endless, nature trails open up to reveal an immense scope of beautiful and pristine natural vistas, together with the diversity of the area’s wildlife.

For exploring deep into the boondocks, you’ll need a powerful snowmobile. Arctic Cat, Polaris, and Ski-Doo have great selections of snowmobiles on offer, and between the three of them, you’ll certainly find a snowmobile to suit your needs and budget.

If you already have a snowmobile, then you’ll know how important it is to have treads you can rely on even in the harshest conditions. During seasonal peaks in West Yellowstone, snowpack can get as deep as 55.”

If you can get your hands on them, my mountain track recommendation has to go to Composit Tracks M770 thanks to how well they work in soft, deep snow and because they fit on plenty of different snowmobiles.

Take a Ski Trip to Vail, Colorado

Vail is a skier’s dream with its 5,317 acres, seeing as much as 30 feet of annual snowfall. The ski resort is spread over numerous mountains, offering a wide variety of terrain, from groomers and moguls to bowls and glades. Vail has terrain to thrill skiers of every level, whether you’re new to the sport or looking for new, exciting challenges.

Vail’s location makes for some fierce snowfall regularly. The snow falls hard and fast whenever Pacific storms come in, offering skiers gorgeous powder with a deep base from the snowfall’s regularity.

Chase the Northern Lights on a Dogsled in Alaska

The Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, has got to be close to the top on most people’s winter bucket list. Aurora season starts in September and ends in April, but winter is the ideal time of year because the nights are the longest.

To have any chance of seeing this amazing natural light show, you’ll need to make your way up to the arctic and antarctic circles; the northernmost areas of Canada offer good chances, but Alaska is your best bet. Fairbanks City and Ester are Alaska’s most easily reachable places for chasing the Aurora.

If you’d prefer to see the Northern Lights further away from the city to avoid all that pesky light pollution, then dogsledding might be just the excursion you’re looking for.

You’ll get to enjoy the company of some very good boys as they take you into the Alaskan tundra for scenic views of not only the Northern Lights but also the Alaskan wilderness.

Ice Fishing on Lake Winnipeg

If you’re planning on enjoying some ice fishing this season, one of the top spots to visit on your next winter fishing excursion is Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. It’s one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, spanning over 250mi from its northern shore to southern.

The southern lake basin is where you’ll find the best angling, with people saying they’ve been able to catch greenback walleyes that weighed in at over 10lbs.

“Winter” Camping in Dry Tortugas, Florida

Dry Tortugas consists of seven islets at the edge of the Florida Keys, which is pretty much as South as you can go without leaving the United States. If your idea of happy holidays involves warmer weather, Dry Tortugas’ 70°F days, and white sandy beaches, might be exactly what you need.

You will need to catch a boat to get there, and camping is limited to sites on Garden Key. But, if you’re up for it, you can rent a kayak and make the 3-mile paddle to Loggerhead Key, where you’ll find plenty of lonely beaches and an ideal environment for snorkelling with massive reefs and sprawling shipwrecks.

The holidays and the winter season are your chance to do something new, especially if you’ve been stuck inside for a while. Whether you prefer snowy winters or balmy ones, you owe it to yourself to enjoy the season. We hope this list of our favourite winter destinations inspires you to take your next adventure.
