EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan State University (MSU) broke ground for a new research and teaching facility for MSU’s plant and science greenhouses.
The new facility will serve 70 faculty members and 600 students in the colleges of agriculture and natural resources and natural science.
The renovations and additions are expected to cost around $35 million, Which includes environmental controls and energy-efficient LED lights as well as a new building for administration and research.
“Michigan produces over 300 commodities, the most agricultural state in the county with a reliable source of water. But we have challenges to face for the future related to climate change, related to producing more food to feed the world in the face of a shrinking amount of farmland. Our scientists here do tremendous research, solving problems of today and problems of the future,” said George Smith the Director of MSU Agbioresearch.
The state of Michigan provided $53 million towards the greenhouse project and the construction of a dairy cattle teaching and research center.
