Highway 51 reopened after fatal pedestrian accident forces closure in Coweta

UPDATE:

As of 5:15 P.M., Highway 51 was reopened.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The City of Coweta is advising residents to avoid travel on Highway 51 due to a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and a driver.

Highway 51 is being shut down by the Coweta Police Department and Coweta Fire Department between 131st St. South and 289th E. Ave.

The highway will be shut down in both directions so officials may process the scene, take photos, and take care of the victim.

In a statement on Wednesday, Coweta officials said,

We are not releasing a name at this point; please don’t ask or post speculation or information about the people involved. Everyone deserves to NOT find out via social media that someone they care about has passed away or been involved in a traffic accident.

Officials expect the highway to remain closed in both directions for about an hour.
