Grimes, Normani, St. Vincent And Cher Star In Pirelli’s 2022 Calendar

This years Pirelli calendar was shot by Bryan Adams, set in LA and Southern Italy and is based on a musicians life on tour.

Since 1964, historic tyre company Pirelli have published an annual calendar filled with images of fashion and music’s biggest icons.

This year’s calendar, titled On the Road, stars some of music’s most recognisable talent: Cher, Grimes, Normani, Rita Ora, Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Kali Uchis and Saweetie.

Musician Bryan Adams took the creative reigns of this project, shooting in The Palace Theatre in Los Angeles and in Capri, Italy.

”It would be very, very hard to encapsulate everything that happens on the road in a couple of days,” said Adams, who has spent over 45 years on tour. “So what I tried to do was to represent some of the aspects of it.”

He continued: “Musicians never really see the front of the building, they see the back of the building, we see the stage door, we see the backstage area, we see the basement of a building… you go from the stage door to the car door to the hotel door to the train door to the bus door… it’s always about travelling.”

For Adams, the connection between music and the artistic world has always been a vital one, and the project goes some way to bringing the two together. “With all these pictures, fantasy plays a big part in trying to create something,” he said. “Because you don’t want it to be literal, you want it to be glamorous, yet it gives the impression of what it might be like.”

This calendar is a joint celebration with the marking of Pirelli’s 150 year anniversary.

Last year due to the pandemic, the 2021 calendar did not go ahead and Pirelli instead donated $100,000 to the vaccine development fund, so the calendar also marks a return to life pre-pandemic.

”We thought his idea of coupling the world of music with that of the road and travel would be perfect for a calendar that is making its comeback as we seek a gradual return to normality after the pandemic,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli’s executive vice chairman and CEO.
