Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended from ABC’s talk show The View following remarks she made about the Holocaust.
According to Sky News, Kim Godwin – the president of ABC News – made the announcement on Tuesday following Goldberg’s public apology.
“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” she wrote.
“While Whoopi has apologised, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organisation stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.”
This marks the latest development since the fallout of Monday’s episode of The View, in which Goldberg participated in a conversation over a US school board’s decision to ban the Pulitzer-prize winning Holocaust novel, Maus.
“Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race,” she said during the discussion. “It’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about.”
When a co-host stated that the Nazi genocide was rooted in white supremacy, Goldberg stated: “But these are two white groups of people.”
“You’re missing the point, the minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it really is. It’s about how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, because black, white, Jews… everybody eats each other.”
Following the intense public backlash, Goldberg issued a public apology, writing: “On today’s show, I said the Holocaust “is not about race, but man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it is about both.”

She continued, “The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused.”
